Red-winged blackbird nest in the cattails in a pond next to the Rideau River, May 2, 2013. I will keep an eye on this nest over the next several weeks, from a safe distance, to see how the blackbirds make out in their effort to raise a brood of chicks.

Been an amateur bird feeder most of my life…watching the juveniles on the pond bank and cattails….helping the parents with 2nd brood (can only assume)…..saw female adult or juvenile drop something white while hanging from cattail…..it sunk so it had to have weight….guess they were cleaning house.
Yes, they are careful when cleaning house not to leave a trail to the nest that predators might follow. It is great watching breeding birds going about their business and seeing to the perpetuation of their species. 🙂
This is my first year to observe red wings nest in pond. They are so much fun. Watching the male chase a heron was a sight to see.
I get a great deal of enjoyment watching them nest and going about their daily lives. I try my best not to disturb them in the process as they will mount a very spirited defense of their nest and chicks.
