The wolf is always at the door. — Don Henley

Keeping the wolf from the door is a fact of life. You never know what fortune will bring. I am reminded of this by the horror unleashed in Christchurch, New Zealand when a maniac went on a killing spree at two mosques where people gathered for prayers. The suspect in this atrocity live-streamed his attack on worshippers at the mosques as he gunned them down. The video is available online for those who want to view it. I listened to the description given by someone who saw the video, and that is more than enough for me; I will not watch the video. What came through in the description of what happened in the video is the sad reality in this horror is the people who perished were utterly defenceless. The likelihood of finding yourself caught in a terror attack at the mercy of someone intent on mayhem is remote but a possibility; just one of the vagaries of fortune. Continue reading

Hera at nine months

Hera wallowing in a muddy puddle

Hera after a run on a hot, humid afternoon saw fit to plop down in a muddy puddle rather than kennel up when we returned to the car. She had cooled off in the Rideau River during the run. She looks quite pleased with herself.

Geoffrey’s hunting diary: Gun conditioning Hera

On a cool and windy April morning Jason and I took Hera and Jason’s dog Nos to a farm where we have permission to hunt for a run and to introduce Hera to the sound of gunfire. We took the opportunity to scout for the upcoming turkey season, setting out trail cameras to watch to see if turkeys are moving about in the area. As you can see in the video, Hera is not bothered at all by the sound of gunfire. You can see also at six months old she is still very much a puppy as she happily plays with my hat after the wind blew it off my head.

Geoffrey’s hunting diary: Hera at the dog park

Hera continues her training as a gun dog. She is by bar a much tougher dog than the three I had before her. She loves to join in rough and tumble play with other dogs with emphasis on the rough.

Geoffrey’s hunting diary: Hera and Nos on a winter run

Footage of Hera on her daily run in early March 2013. She is a plucky little dog, going for a run almost daily over the winter months. We stayed home only on days when the temperature dipped to -30 C and below. On this occasion we run into my hunting buddy Jason and his dog Nos.
